Waves on Rocks Scarf: Free crochet pattern

 Waves on Rocks Crochet Scarf

What’s in a name?

It might sound silly, but some of what drives my choice of stitches in scarf patterns is what I will name the pattern. Sometimes the stitches drive the name. The honey buzzzz scarf contained honeycomb trellis and a honeycomb stitch. Also, I made the sample in yellow. Sometimes the name comes from a feeling I get about the piece. The winter picnic hat has a rather random name, but the fun texture of the warm hat just kept making me think I’d like to wear it to eat lunch outside in the cold. With this project, I knew I wanted to use a wave-like pattern stitch and then the name popped into my head. I’d been playing around with rows of puff stitches in a couple of other projects, so I plopped them between sections of waves in this pattern. Boom: The Waves on Rocks Scarf.

Crochet waves and puff stitches for the Waves on Rocks Scarf

The rows of waves create some openwork that are anchored by the puff stitch rocks every 8 waves. The puff stitch rocks have a bit of density to them, giving the scarf a bit more warmth it would have had with just the waves.

Pattern Notes

This pattern uses U.S. crochet terms.

Crocheted with an F hook. But play around with hook size depending on what yarn you use.

While I made this sample with a medium-weight silk and cashmere yarn recovered from a sweater, you can use just about any DK or worsted yarn. For an inexpensive option, I recommend Caron Simply Soft.

The scarf ends up like a big rectangle, so gauge is relatively unimportant. Crochet with whatever yarn and hook you feel comfortable with and that make the stitches like you want them to look.

Puff stitch: *Yarn over, insert hook into stitch below and pull up a loop. Repeat from * 3 more times. Yarn over and pull through all loops on hook. Puff stitch made.

Finishing

I frequently do not get around to blocking items when I’m finished with them, but with this one, I did. This pattern will benefit greatly from some gentle blocking. The waves will roll more consistently and the rocks won’t scatter to the side of the scarf if you line them up during blocking.

Blocking the Waves on Rocks Scarf

I donated the sample to an auction raising money for my niece’s school. I didn’t hear how it ended up doing, but lets hope it helps with a couple of books!
