Puffed Waves Crochet Scarf: Free crochet pattern

This puffed waves crochet scarf ticks all my boxes for a perfect crochet project. I love projects you can complete sooner rather than later. Projects with easily memorizable pattern repeats make Netflix + crochet way easier. A stitch pattern that shows off swoon-worthy colors of my yarn? Yes, please! As I’ve mentioned before, crocheting scarves (and more scarves) is the best. Scarves allow you to try things out without a huge commitment AND you get a finished object out of the deal. Further, you don’t have to figure out increases and decreases like you do with a hat. When my sister gave me some Red Heart Unforgettable, I dove into showing off its gorgeous color changes with the puffed waves crochet scarf.

Red Heart Unforgettable yarn

If you haven’t worked with Red Heart Unforgettable, get some to play with! The colors wowed me the whole time I crocheted with it. As if I wasn’t already staying up too late crocheting, self-striping yarn motivates me to keep crocheting. “Oooh! What color is coming up next!??”

The first time I used Unforgettable, I noted that the yarn slips a little while you work it. But the second time this didn’t happen, so I wonder if it’s a function of hook size. (I used a larger hook the first time through.) You might need to pay a tiny bit more attention while you stitch to keep the yarn where you want it, but other than that it works up nicely. It’s a roving yarn, not made of twisted strands. This means no splitting while you stitch!

In the reviews for this yarn, some people noted that it was next to impossible to undo your stitches because the roving yarn would fuzz up. I did find that it took a great deal of care to undo stitches. If you pull slowly, you should be able to do it. I probably undid six or seven rows in the first half of the blues/greens scarf.

I do suggest buying a little more than you might need for two reasons. First, you might need to run through the colors a bit to get to a matching color when changing skeins. Second, some reviewers complained about a knot in the middle of the skein, connecting two unrelated color sections together. This did happen with one of my skeins, so it could be an issue.

Puffed Waves Crochet Scarf: The stitches

The stitch pattern comes from my favorite stitch dictionary, Crochet Stitch Dictionary by Sarah Hazell. A fairly simple pattern, after a couple of rows, you’ll have it memorized. You’ll want to ignore your instinct to stitch into the chain-3 that begins a wave row. I did not ignore this instinct the first time around and my edges got weird. One side slopes and curls and the other runs predictably straight. When I tried again, the edges slightly sloped on each side and created a pleasing staggered look. So, don’t sc into the chain 3 at the end of your single crochet rows. Do your last single crochet into the first dc from the previous row and then do your chain 3 and turn. It will look like you’re going to end up with uneven edges, but they will work out.

The first third of the way through the scarf, my Netflix + crochet time saw me making minor mistakes. It became worth it to pause my show and count my row of sc stitches. Of course, if you’re watching something less intense, you can probably count while you watch. Usually, my mistake was omitting a sc between a puff stitch and a Dc2tog.

Puffed Waves Crochet Scarf: Hook size

Unbelievably, the label for Unforgettable yarn calls for a J (6mm) hook. A J hook was too big for this project. I chose an H when I did the first puffed waves crochet scarf in polo (the orange/burgundy/teal colorway). The second time I made this scarf, I wanted the stitches to be a little tighter so I used an F hook. I actually found the yarn easier to work with and the stitches more pleasing when using the F hook. The fabric is definitely denser with the smaller hook. Pick what works best for you.

Pattern Notes

Yarn: Red Heart Unforgettable, 2 skeins.

Hook size: F, G, or H. The H hook gives it a looser, more drapey feel. The F hook gives it a denser fabric with more stitch definition. Play around with it and see what works best for you. Luckily with a scarf, gauge doesn’t matter!

I use U.S. crochet terms in this pattern.

Pattern Stitches

Dc2tog: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch below, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops on hook. Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops on hook. Yarn over and pull through remaining loops.  Dc2tog made. (Essentially, you make half of a double crochet in a stitch, and then do it again in another stitch. And then make the second half of the double crochet for both of them together.)

Puff stitch: First, yarn over, insert hook into the stitch below and pull up a loop. Next, yarn over again, insert hook into the same place and pull up a second loop. Yarn over a third time, insert hook into the same place and pull up a third loop. Finally, yarn over and pull through everything on your hook. Puff stitch made.

Puffed waves of the future

If you make a puffed waves crochet scarf, tag me on instagram (@traineehero) to show off your make! I will probably make a few more of these before the year is up. The other colorways of Unforgettable are just crying out to become a puffed waves scarf! I would absolutely love to see what yarn you use and what hook size you decide to go with.

I have a matching hat design in the works, so check back soon to add to your puffed waves accessory collection! Plus, hat and scarf sets make lovely gifts!

  1. I really love what you have created here. I would love to make this interesting scarf. I don’t understand then puff stitches. I’ve only been crocheting two years. I taught myself via YouTube.

    1. Go to YouTube and look for puff stitch, there’s a good video on it. When making this scarf follow the video instructions for puff stitch including the chain 1, when working this pattern you need all those ch1 to get count right. The chain also counts as your ch1 between your puff and dc2tog no need for a extra 1.

  2. I enjoy you because of all of the effort on this blog. Betty delights in carrying out internet research and it’s easy to see why. A lot of people hear all about the compelling form you convey both interesting and useful guidance by means of the blog and attract contribution from other individuals about this area and my child has always been becoming educated a great deal. Enjoy the remaining portion of the new year. You’re carrying out a useful job.

    1. Idk where I keep messing up. If I don’t sc in the ch3 of previous roll I come up short. I have 33 across. Help. Lol

      1. I think that for Row 2, the second set of puff stitches should have Chain 1 in parentheses. It would then mirror the other set of puff stitches in this row and make up for the missed stitches.

        For example,

Row 2: Chain 3 and turn. Skip first sc, dc in next sc. (Dc2tog across next two sc) twice. (Chain 1, puff stitch in next sc) five times. Chain 1. (Dc2tog across next two sc) six times. (Chain 1, puff stitch in next sc) five times. Chain 1. (Dc2tog across next two sc) three times. (34 st)

I guess that would be not counting the Chain 3 as a stitch and skipping the first sc as written.

    1. I might be confused, but I don’t know how there can be 34 sc in row 3, if you reduced row 2 by 22 stitches with the DC2TOG. Even with the 4 ch1 spaces, it’s still way short. What am I missing?

It always leaves a hole, but we have the memories, and they become more vivid when our loved ones leave us. we too are five sisters in our family, so my daughters have four aunts, some more involved than others in their lives. My mother had no sisters, but she had two aunts and a sister-in-law to whom we became close, and we share memories about them when we get together as sisters. A lovely blog post! Hence the need to wait longer to take a higher CPP amount because of the pension being reduced by the same amount of CPP. If I take the CPP right now, I will be after the fact receiving less money at 65 than presently. Sara-Ann Erick Azarcon
